Automotive Aluminum Alloys: 3003 and 5052

The aluminum heat exchanger for automobiles is composed of aluminum tubes for cooling water and cooling fins for heat dissipation. Aluminum tubes are generally made of 1xxx and 3xxx aluminum alloys by extrusion and drawing.

The cooling fins are made of composite foil of 3xxx and 6xxx aluminum alloy core material and 4xxx and 7xxx aluminum alloy brazing layer. Alloy 3003 is a popular choice. Its chemical composition is: 0.6 Si, 0.7 Fe, 0.05-0.20 Cu, 0.1 Zn, 1.0-1.5 Mn, 0.1+0.2 impurities, and the balance is Al. The aluminum content of 3003 aluminum alloy is about 96.925%.

The batteries that provide driving power for electric vehicles are called power batteries, including traditional lead-acid batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries, and emerging lithium-ion power batteries. At present, the world is promoting lightweight vehicles, and aluminum is a better choice. The power battery shell material is preferably 3003 aluminum plate.

3003 aluminum sheet aluminum plate has good formability and is mainly used in deep drawing materials. Using 3003 aluminum alloy to make stamping parts, models, shells, etc. has many advantages such as good surface, good plasticity, and pressure resistance. The power battery casing made of 3003 aluminum alloy products is impact-resistant, not easy to crack and leak, and can meet the strength and rigidity requirements of the power battery casing.

In addition, automotive aluminum sheet has low density and light weight, which can reduce battery weight, increase battery capacity density, make battery work stable, indirectly reduce vehicle weight and increase vehicle endurance.

There are many aluminum alloy grades used in domestic and foreign automobile plates: AA6016, AA6022, AA6111, AA6005, AA6009, AA6010, AA5182, AA5754, AA5052, etc. For example:Acura NSX uses 5052 aluminum alloy as the body and 6××× aluminum alloy as the external panel.

Aluminium 5052 h32 is very popular among 5052 aluminum, showing high fatigue strength, good cold workability, excellent polishing effect and excellent corrosion resistance. It is ideal for skinning a variety of vehicles such as vans, trailers, marine diesel tanks, truck air brake tanks, gasoline or lube lines, etc.

At present, auto body panels are mainly 5xxx aluminum alloys, such as such as 5052 and 5182 alloys. In terms of deep drawing performance and tensile strength, 5052 aluminum alloy is far inferior to 5182 alloy. Therefore, the preferred aluminum alloy material for complex deep-drawing inner panels of automobiles is 5182-O state thin plate.
