What Are Metal Used in Car Bodies

The metals used in automobile manufacturing can be divided into two categories: ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals. Ferrous metals mainly include ordinary thin steel plates, high-quality thin steel plates and coated thin steel plates.

Non-ferrous metal plates refer to other metals and their alloys other than steel and iron, and their appearance and performance have their own characteristics. It is worth noting that due to improper storage or long time, the metal surface may rust, so it needs to be rusted before use, including mechanical rust removal and chemical rust removal.

In automobile manufacturing, ferrous metal is one of the most commonly used metal materials. According to the rolling method, it can be divided into hot-rolled steel plates and cold-rolled steel plates, and according to the thickness, it can be divided into thin steel plates and thick steel plates. These metal materials play an important role in automobile manufacturing and can be used in the manufacture of parts such as body, chassis, engine and wheels.

In addition to ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals are also indispensable metal materials in automobile manufacturing. Non-ferrous metal sheets refer to other metals and their alloys other than steel and iron, such as aluminum, copper, magnesium, etc.

They have their own characteristics in appearance and performance, and can be used to manufacture parts such as car bodies, engines, and seats. In automobile manufacturing, the use of non-ferrous metals is becoming more and more widespread because they have better lightweight and corrosion resistance.

At present, the most commonly used automotive aluminum sheets are AA6016, AA6022, AA6111, AA6005, AA6009 and AA6010, AA5182, AA5754, AA5052, etc. For example: Plymouth Prowler uses 6022 as body panels and Audi A8 uses 6016 as body panels.

Current vehicles are mainly made of steel, with some made of aluminum. The vehicle frame, including the floor, car doors, roof, body side panels and fenders are usually made of steel. Because these parts are most important to the driver's safety, it is difficult to replace them with other materials. Other parts like car hood can be made of aluminum.

It should be noted that metal materials need to be rust-free before use to ensure the service life and safety of the car. Mechanical rust removal is to scrape off the rust on the metal surface by using tools such as wire brushes and grinding wheels, while chemical rust removal is to remove the rust on the metal surface by using acidic or alkaline solutions. These treatment methods can effectively extend the service life of automotive parts and improve the safety performance of the car.
