What Is The Thickness of Outer Shell Panels of Cars

The general door structure is: the inner door panel (generally connected to the window frame), the outer door panel, and the door reinforcement panel. After decades of development, the aluminum alloy plate for car body has formed a huge family. Different countries have their own emphasis on the use of alloys. For example, Japanese automobile industry uses more 5000 series and Europe is more interested in 6000 series like 6111 aluminum.

6000 series alloys belong to the same series as the most widely used construction aluminum alloys, which are very beneficial to waste recycling and the development of circular economy. The thickness of the automotive aluminum alloy plate is generally 0.8~1.6mm, and the maximum width is 2300mm.

Its performance requirements are: good formability, low yield ratio and high forming limit, strong surface smoothness, no Roping Line or slip line on the surface of formed sheet metal parts, good weldability and excellent bake hardenability.

2XXX alloys are heat-treatable and strengthened alloys with good formability and high strength, but poor corrosion resistance and low bake hardening ability, which are mainly used for automotive inner panels.

5xxx alloys are non-heat-treated strengthened alloys. After the aluminum plate is stamped and formed, the surface is easy to wrinkle, and the ductility and bending ability are also lacking, so it is mostly used for the inner plate. 6XXX alloys are heat-treatable and strengthened alloys with good formability and bake hardenability. They are currently the main research direction of automotive sheet metal.

As mentioned above, automotive aluminum sheets mainly includes 6xxx and 5xxx alloys. The typical grades are 6016, 6111, 6022, 6181, 5052, 5182, 5754 and other aluminum alloys. What are their differences?

6xxx Al-Mg-Si(-Cu) alloy

Al-Mg-Si-(Cu) alloys are widely used in automotive panels and other fields due to their high strength and good formability. The requirement for this type of alloy is to have better plasticity before baking and higher precipitation hardening ability during the baking process, that is, to have a higher baking hardening response.

Al-Mg-Si-(Cu) alloy is an aluminum alloy that can be strengthened by heat treatment. It has good formability, strong corrosion resistance, high strength and good high temperature resistance. In addition, the yield strength and tensile strength of the Al-Mg-Si aluminum sheet in T4 state are similar to those of the steel plate, and the n value exceeds that of the steel plate.

5xxxx Al-Mg alloy

It is an aluminum alloy that cannot be strengthened by heat treatment. It has the characteristics of medium strength, good corrosion resistance, good processing performance and good welding performance.

In the Al-Mg alloy, Mg dissolves in the aluminum matrix to form a solid solution strengthening effect, so that the alloy like alloy 5083 has the advantages of ordinary carbon steel plates in terms of strength, formability and corrosion resistance, which can be used for complex shapes such as automotive inner panels.
