Al Alloy 7075 for ABS Body Parts

Due to the advantages of light weight, good corrosion resistance, and excellent mechanical properties, aluminum alloys are more and more widely used for the ABS body parts. 7xxx series aluminum alloys are one of the ultra-high-strength aluminum alloy, featuring the high strength, good forming and welding properties.

In recent years, with the development of the automobile industry and the aviation industry, people have put forward higher requirements for the performance of aluminum alloys. The strength of aluminum alloys can be improved through proper composition design, precise control of the strengthening phase in the alloy, and optimization of the heat treatment process system. As a heat treatment strengthened aluminum alloy, Al alloy 7075 can improve its performance through proper heat treatment system.

At the same aging temperature, the hardness of the aluminum alloy increases with the increase of the aging time, indicating that the aluminum alloy has a strong age hardening ability. When the aging temperature is 150 °C, the peak time is 6 h, and the hardness decreases slightly after reaching the peak; when the aging temperature is 100 °C and 120 °C, the peak aging time is 32 h and 18 h, respectively, indicating that the higher the single-stage aging temperature, the shorter the hardness peak time. After reaching the peak hardness at 100 and 120°C, it keeps fluctuating at a high level. When the aging temperature is 120℃ for 16 h, the peak hardness is 220HV.

When the aging temperature is 100℃, the peak time of tensile strength is 36 hours, and the peak strength is 672.3 MPa, which is 4 hours later than the peak time of hardness; when aging at 120℃, the peak tensile strength is 6 hours later than the hardness, and the peak strength is 680.5MPa; When the aging temperature is 150℃, the peak strength is 660.3MPa, and the time point is 6 h later than the hardness peak.

The peak elongations at 100, 120, and 150°C are 15.3%, 12.8%, and 9.2%, respectively, and the elongation decreases sequentially with increasing aging temperature. Combining hardness and strength indicators, it is considered that the single-stage aging system at 120°C/24 h more appropriate.

When the quenching temperature is 930 °C, the microstructure is mainly lath martensite, and a small amount of ferrite appears when the heating time is 30 s, which is not good for the mechanical properties. As the heating time increases, the martensitic structure does not change much, and the mechanical properties gradually increase.

When the quenching temperature is 960 °C, the microstructure is lath martensite. With the increase of heating time, the martensite lath is slightly coarsened, and the yield strength gradually decreases. The tensile strength and elongation increase first, and then decrease after 60 s.

When the heating time is 180 s, as the quenching temperature increases, the martensitic lath gradually coarsens, the tensile strength and yield strength show an almost linear decreasing trend, while the elongation first decreases and then slightly increases, but the overall change is not big.
